Someone you love is comparing the Army with college and the trades. Here is the plain version. Numbers first. Pressure nowhere. Send this page to whoever you talk these decisions over with.

The numbers, plainly

What it pays, in one example

Take a new soldier at E-1, living off post near Gaithersburg, Maryland. Base pay is $2,407.20 a month after the first four months. Housing allowance for that ZIP code is $2,409 a month. Food allowance is $476.95 a month. That adds up to $5,293 a month in cash.

That is one example, not a promise. The real number depends on rank, ZIP code, and housing. Tuition help runs up to $4,500 a year. There are more than 200 jobs to pick from, and the training carries into civilian work.

Run your own numbers on the calculator, with your rank and ZIP code, instead of taking this example on faith.

The commitment

What they are actually signing

Active duty is a full-time job. They live where they are assigned, and the Army sets the schedule.

The Army Reserve is the part-time path. Civilian job or college most of the month, soldier on drill weekends and training weeks. How the Reserve works, plainly.

Contracts run multiple years. The exact length depends on the contract and the job. Read the contract itself before anyone signs anything.

Sending the official form does not enlist anyone. It starts a conversation and a breakdown. It commits them to nothing.

Honestly

Every path costs something

Training takes months away from home. Moves happen. Some jobs carry more risk than others, and that is worth asking about directly.

College can mean debt before the first paycheck. The trades can mean a slower start, and pay that varies a lot by area. There is no option with no downside.

The question is not which path is perfect. It is which cost fits the person.

Privacy

What happens to their info

The official form goes into the Army's official system. That is the Army's form, on the Army's side.

A question sent through this site goes to Zach only, by email. It is deleted when asked, or when the conversation ends. No marketing blasts. No list sold to anyone.

If they are 17, enlisting needs written parent or guardian consent.
